Fairtrade Fortnight (29th February – 13th March) is a two-week long annual national campaign which this year is raising awareness for the millions of farmers around the world who produce everyday foods for families in the UK, but can’t afford to feed their own families due to receiving little money back.

Organised by the Fairtrade Foundation and with the slogan, ‘Sit down for Breakfast, Stand up for Farmers’, the focus is on breakfast, the most important meal of the day. We take it for granted every morning but farmers aren’t receiving enough money in order to continue producing products such as coffee and tea, staples of a British breakfast.

By having a Fairtrade breakfast, you are ensuring that are a large proportion of the money you have spent goes back to the farmer. With this, they can now fulfil a basic need – putting food on the table for their families, all year round.

But how can you have a Fairtrade Feast whilst keeping your teeth healthy?

3 Ways to Have a Fairtrade Breakfast That’s Good For Your Teeth

Here are three different and vibrant ways to have a Fairtrade breakfast and also keep your pearly whites in good shape.

  1. Avocado and Poached Eggs on Toast:
A super easy and filling breakfast comprising of fresh avocado, poached eggs and toasted whole grain bread. Avocado are fantastic for your teeth as it is rich in phosphorous, magnesium and manganese which help maintain bone health and reduce your risk of osteoporosis. Eggs contain a large amount of vitamin D in the yolk, which you need to absorb calcium and also provides high amounts of protein which helps muscle recovery, so it is a great choice for the mornings. Carefully cut the avocado in half, twist apart the two sides, discard the seed and then scoop out the flesh in one go with a spoon. Mash or slice up the avocado however you want and add a squeeze of lemon (this helps the avocado stay green!), spread on toast and top with a poached egg or two. Finished with a small sprinkle of salt and pepper to season and voila!
  2. Porridge Oats topped with Greek Yoghurt, Strawberry and Banana:
Porridge using the humble oat is a great alternative to sugary cereals and are high in fibre and help reduce the risk of high blood pressure among many other talents. Greek yoghurt packs in the calcium needed for healthy bones and teeth, protein to keep you fuller for longer and probiotics to help maintain a healthy gut. Banana contains potassium, magnesium and manganese – these are naturally occurring minerals which are absorbed in to the enamel and lessens staining. Fresh strawberries contain malic acid, which can naturally help whiten teeth. If you have got a bit of a sweet tooth, you can always add honey to your porridge as it is brimming with anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory properties.  You can also add a dash of cinnamon powder which helps regulate your blood sugars and is a healthy alternative to adding sugar – and so kinder to your teeth!
  3. Spinach and Cheese Bagel:
Spinach is a leafy green which is packed with Iron, Vitamin A, Calcium and fibre and is full of oxalic acid which helps to reduce tooth sensitivity. While you may know that cheese is chock-full of calcium, did you know it also cancels out the pH levels of acid in your mouth, which helps reduce the risk of tooth decay? Toast a wholegrain bagel and top with fresh or wilted spinach and add some slices of your favourite cheese to the mix – you can even try melting the cheese for an extra tasty oomph!
