What Are Dental Crowns?

Dental crowns are a common dental treatment used for both cosmetic and restorative purposes. They are caps, usually used to cover teeth that are damaged, and can be made from metal or porcelain. Metal used to be a popular choice for crowns in the rear of the mouth but with new technology and advances in porcelain materials, using metal crowns is rare.

The treatment process for crowns is very similar to the steps of treatment for veneers. Dental crowns involve preparing the teeth by shaving them down to make space for the porcelain, then cementing a cap onto the remaining natural tooth. This procedure can be moderately invasive, normally requiring 1mm of tooth to be shaved (unlike the over-shaving you sometimes see in videos online!) and will be performed under local anaesthetic. By comparison, the process for veneers is less invasive and involves less shaving of the teeth, normally 0.5mm. This makes veneers a better option for cosmetic purposes, whilst crowns are normally used for restorative purposes. Some veneers can in fact be fitted without the need for any shaving with the advancements in porcelain technology and digital smile design.

Our Synergy smile makeover experts have years of experience in creating beautiful smiles and can tell you which option is best suited for your smile. Often, to avoid shaving healthy teeth, our Synergy dentists will suggest a combination of veneers and crowns to create a complete cosmetic smile makeover with veneers, whilst also protecting damaged teeth and strengthening them with crowns.

What Are The Differences Between The Types Of Crowns?

We offer several different types of crowns to suit everyone’s needs and budget. As crowns are both a restorative and cosmetic treatment, they come in a wide variety of materials from standard metal to top-grade porcelain. All of our crowns, regardless of their material, will be designed to perfectly fit your mouth for improved comfort.

Metal: Metal crowns are made from silver or gold. These crowns are extremely strong, but don’t have a very natural appearance, leading to their decline in popularity in recent years. They are primarily for use on the teeth at the rear of the mouth where they’ll be less visible.

Gold Quality Porcelain: The gold quality porcelain is backed with a strong substructure, making it much more durable than the bronze quality porcelain crown. It also comes in a much wider variety of shades with variation to match your natural teeth more seamlessly.

Luxe Quality Porcelain: Our Luxe quality porcelain crowns are the highest quality available. They are bespoke made to order for each patient at our in-house dental laboratory in our HQ using the best quality of porcelain (sometimes called E-max or Zirconia). Luxe quality crowns are backed with a compressed porcelain substructure, making them extremely durable. They come in a variety of shades. Natural teeth are often shaded towards the gumline and translucent along the biting surface. Our Luxe quality porcelain replicates this shade variation for the most natural smile possible. During a complimentary shade appointment, your dentist will match your crowns to the colourisation of your teeth, letting your crowns blend seamlessly into your natural smile.

How Are Dental Crowns Fitted?  Crowns Treatment Process In 3 Steps!

Step 1 – Consultation

Each treatment at Synergy starts with a consultation with one of our expert dentists. During your consultation, we’ll conduct a thorough examination of your oral health. Then we’ll discuss your smile concerns and the results you’re looking to achieve. We will take digital scans and clinical photographs as well as x-rays to then design your smile. We’ll outline your options and create a treatment report for you within 48 hours – your treatment report will go into detail about what treatment options are available to you and how much they’ll cost. Once you’ve made a decision to go ahead with treatment, we’ll have a few forms for you to sign, then you can book in for your treatment!

Step 2 –  Preparation

Crowns require for your natural teeth to be shaved down in order to make space for the crowns to fit on top. Unfortunately, this means the crowns process is not reversible, so make sure you’re fully committed to having crowns!

This step can be slightly invasive, so your dentist will use local anaesthetic to make sure the treatment is painless.

We will then fit a temporary crown for you to go home with, ensuring you don’t leave without a smile! You will have the opportunity to choose the shade of your new teeth too. The temporary crowns are often a replica of the final shape so you can see how the teeth will look.

Step 3 – Crown Fit

Once your new crowns have been made by the dental lab, we’ll see you again to remove the temporary crown and fit the permanent crown. This will be made from much higher quality than the temporary crowns and will be much more durable and natural looking.

Then you can go home and enjoy your new smile!

How Do I Maintain My Crowns?

Crowns are durable and easy to maintain. With proper care, crowns should last 10 years at minimum. It’s important to remember that your natural teeth are still underneath your crowns and can still decay, so you still need to brush and floss with crowns just like you would with natural teeth.

It’s also important to remember that crowns can stain and can’t be brightened with tooth whitening treatment, so you should avoid staining foods and drinks like coffee or wine.
