What is Teeth Whitening?
Many of us are familiar with teeth whitening, sometimes called “bleaching” your teeth. This popular cosmetic dental treatment is a process of gradually lightening the tooth enamel using a peroxide solution. Many people choose to undertake tooth whitening because they are unhappy with the shade of their teeth.
It’s also common for patients to decide to combine tooth whitening with other cosmetic procedures like composite bonding treatment or Invisalign to make their whole smile white. Tooth whitening works by bleaching the tooth enamel; therefore, it only works on natural teeth and will not work on veneers or crowns, but can be used to whiten the surrounding teeth.
Our teeth can appear dark for many reasons, the most common of which is staining. There are many causes of teeth straining, but the common culprits are activities like drinking coffee, wine, and smoking. Tooth whitening can help fix the appearance of stains.
For best results, you may want to talk to your dentist about having one of our hygiene treatments such as an Oxyjet clean or Prestige clean to remove stains and plaque before undergoing whitening.
With proper maintenance, teeth whitening can last for up to 3 years before needing to repeat the procedure.

Teeth Whitening in 4 Simple Steps
1. Consultation With Your Dentist
First, we will arrange a consultation appointment. During this appointment, one of our dentists will perform a thorough examination of your mouth and your oral health to check that you are able to have tooth whitening. This is also your chance to ask your dentist any questions you may have about tooth whitening and discuss any concerns.
Once you have agreed with your dentist that you are happy to go ahead with treatment, we will create your custom-made whitening trays.
Whilst you are waiting for your whitening trays to be made, we will provide a special teeth whitening toothpaste to prepare your teeth. This will help to reduce any sensitivity and make the tooth whitening process more comfortable.
2. Using Your At-Home Kit
Once your custom whitening trays are ready, it’s time to start wearing them! You’ll need to wear your custom whitening trays overnight, every night for the next 2 weeks or as instructed by your dentist. Brush your teeth as normal, then put a small amount of the whitening gel in each tray.
Carefully insert your trays and leave them overnight.
In the morning, make sure to clean your whitening trays thoroughly to prevent bacteria build-up. Always store your gel syringes in the fridge.
3. Review Appointment
After your at-home whitening period is over, we’ll see you at the practice again to review your new smile and check you are happy with the results.
4. Maintaining Your White Smile
To maintain your white smile, you’ll need to adopt a simple top-up regime. Simply top-up by wearing the trays with the gels overnight one night a month every 2 months during the first year after your treatment is complete, then one night every 3 months in the second year. After this point, you can continue to keep your whitening topped-up every 6 months.
It’s important to avoid activities that may stain your new white smile. Coffee, wine, and cigarettes all have the potential to stain teeth. You can protect your new smile by quitting smoking and reducing your coffee and alcohol intake.
If you do drink anything that may stain your teeth, you can reduce the severity of staining by drinking through a straw.
Teeth Whitening FAQs:
At-home tooth whitening kits might sound like a great idea, but the reality is that these at-home bleaching kits don’t contain a high enough peroxide percentage to cause any lasting changes to your teeth. Over-the-counter whitening kits have not been made to fit your unique mouth shape, therefore there is a risk that the whitening agent will spill out during wear and cause burns on the gums, tongue, and inner mouth.
It’s always best to have whitening done by a professional – it’s safer for your oral health and will produce better results, saving you money in the long-term.
Beauty salons may offer teeth whitening services; however, it is rare that these services are performed by licensed dental professionals. Do your research to check that the person performing your whitening treatment is a licensed dentist by searching their qualifications on the GDC here.
It is illegal for anyone who isn’t a licensed dental practitioner to perform tooth whitening procedures. You should avoid beauty salons that offer whitening services unless you are sure they’re being performed by a trained dental professional. Our safe teeth whitening options are much better and will cost you less money in the long-term.
Sensitivity is a common side-effect of tooth whitening, but this usually goes away shortly after treatment. Sensitivity is usually mild and shouldn’t be painful. If you’re concerned about the levels of sensitivity you’re experiencing, see your dentist immediately – we’re always happy to help!
If you’re unhappy about the shade of your teeth, that’s a good indicator that your teeth need some whitening. Even if your teeth are already mostly white, if you have concerns about your smile, we will find a way to help.
If you’re thinking of whitening your smile, you may be concerned about your eligibility for tooth whitening. Some people can’t have their teeth whitened for a range of reasons. If you have severe gum disease, we will need to treat this before we can whiten your teeth. Another common reason for having difficulty whitening your teeth is Bruxism, or teeth grinding. There may also be other complications such as medical conditions or medications that may result in being ineligible for teeth whitening.
Tooth whitening will only work on natural teeth, as the enamel needs to “absorb” the bleaching agent. If you have crowns, veneers, composite bonding, or implants, tooth whitening will not work as these are man-made materials. Tooth whitening will still work on your natural teeth, however. It’s very common for people who have cosmetic work on their top teeth to also have their bottom teeth whitened as part of their treatment to bring their whole smile to the same natural white shade.
After spending money on a professional-grade teeth whitening procedure, you want to keep your smile bright. Thankfully, we have some tips to maintain bright white teeth.
Keep your teeth white by following the top-up instructions as provided by your dentist. You should also avoid staining your newly whitened teeth wherever possible by cutting back on coffee, wine, and cigarettes.
We know most people (us included) can’t survive without a morning brew, so if you must drink coffee after tooth whitening, use a straw to reduce the risk of staining.
