Lots of options for crowns

Q. What should I do if my dental crown breaks or comes out unexpectedly?

A. Crowns are quite a common form of dental restoration which is used to preserve the shape and size of the teeth. They strengthen teeth that have been damaged and protect teeth that are likely to fracture. So, when a crown falls out or breaks when you are not expecting it, it can provide a lot of inconveniences.

But don’t worry, it isn’t the end of the world. Once it falls out, if the crown is still intact then you may still be able to put it back over the tooth temporarily. Just make sure the inside of the crown is clean and apply some dental adhesive over it, which you can buy from pharmacies.

If you have lost the crown or it becomes damaged then this leaves the tooth tissue exposed. Therefore, you can either apply a bit of clove oil with a cotton swab if it feels sensitive or some dental cement directly on to the tooth’s surface. In any case, book yourself in to see your dentist as soon as possible so that it can be fixed.

A crown that has fallen out or is lost can cause a lot of pain and have a negative psychological effect as well. If you have the crown, your dentist may be able to fit it back, provided he or she is satisfied that it isn’t damaged or infected. If the crown has been lost or damaged then your dentist will simply fit a temporary crown and call you back in for the permanent fixture.
