Q. How can I help maintain my oral health routine?
A. It is vitally important to brush your teeth twice a day for two minutes to stop the build-up of bacterial plaque. Almost a quarter of adults in the UK don’t brush twice a day, and studies show that missing a single session can start the process of cavities forming. It’s not just about brushing your teeth, but how you brush your teeth.
One of the most common mistakes people make is skimming over areas of the mouth, especially when they’re in a rush–but this will leave plaque behind. Try not to brush too hard as you could damage gums. Use the right tools for the job. There is a range of different toothbrushes out there, but brushes with a small head are generally the best, as you can reach all areas of your mouth easily. The softer the bristles are, the better they are for your gums.
We’ve all been there when it comes to not replacing your tooth brush when needed. Once the bristles start losing strength and form, it’s time for them to go! Try to buy multiple brushes, so you can be assured that you’ll always have a spare one.
No brush will ever be able to get between the gaps in your teeth and requires the help of floss. Without flossing, you will allow the build-up of plaque along your gum line which could lead to gum disease. Lastly, visit your dentist regularly. Problems can be spotted and dealt with earlier and you will help keep your oral health in check for longer.
