Q. When should I start taking my child to the dentist?
A. This should happen once the first tooth emerges and no later than the first birthday.
A dental visit at a timely age serves as a “well-baby examination” for the teeth. Besides inspecting for cavities and further difficulties, the dentist can show you how to clean your child’s teeth correctly and how to handle habits like thumb sucking.
Get your children prepared for the appointment — talk to him or her about what’s going to happen, remaining upbeat and encouraging. Have your child rehearse opening their mouth to get them amenable for the dentist counting and checking their teeth. Reading books or watching videos related to first dental visits may help with this first visit.
Parents can also prepare. When arranging the visit, ask for any required patient forms for you to fill in advance at home instead of at the practice on the day of your appointment, as this is quicker and simpler.
The dentist will examine your child to ensure the jaw and teeth are emerging in the way they should. During the appointment, you will be seated in the dental chair with your child on your lap if your child isn’t able to or refuses to sit in the chair alone.
The dentist will inspect for mouth injuries, cavities or other problems, then clean your child’s teeth and give you tips for day-to-day upkeep.
If your child cries a little or wiggles during the appointment, don’t worry. It’s normal, and your dental team appreciates this is a new experience for your child.Unsure about your dental health?
