I’ve got missing teeth – what are the best options for me?

Q. I’ve got multiple teeth missing and my dentist has recommended implants. How important is it to get them?

A. I would say that replacing missing teeth is extremely important for a number of reasons and that dental implants are probably the best option, too. A dental implant is a tiny titanium alloy screw which is used to replace your missing natural teeth. It’s drilled into your jawbone so that it can be firmly attached to the artificial teeth.

The reasons why getting teeth replaced is important is because of the impact it can have on your oral health, comfort within the mouth and appearance. Even when you lose a single tooth, it affects your dental structure as a whole. The gap that’s created can shift the remaining teeth with even the most normal chewing motions.

This can then lead to further problems down the line, particularly if the structure of the mouth interferes, with your ability to chew foods. From a comfort perspective, it can be unpleasant when a hard piece of food comes in between the exposed root of a missing tooth.

This results in some people giving up foods they love because of it, which impacts their quality of life. Losing one tooth or even multiple teeth can cause emotional stress, affect your confidence and even lead to depression. Having a dental implant can be effective in boosting your morale as well as your overall appearance.

You won’t feel any pain during the procedure of getting an implant as you will be under local anaesthetic. However, you may feel discomfort in the week afterward.
