When the pulp, or nerves within the tooth, becomes inflamed it must be removed and replaced with root filling material to prevent infection spreading or entering through the tooth. This also prevents an abscess from forming around the root of the tooth, which can lead to infection and possible tooth extraction as a means of treatment.
Although safe, the procedure can lead to a weakening of the tooth’s structure and leave it fragile. As such, your dentist may suggest you have a crown fitted onto the tooth in order to prevent damage and protect the tooth from further infection. This can be done as part of the process.
