Orthodontic Braces | DIY Fixes

Orthodontic braces are quite a popular choice to straighten teeth. Since, however, they are complex, multi-part constructions, occasionally problems may occur.

Always see your dentist about these, but if you don’t have an immediate appointment there are temporary fixes.

What to do if you break or displace the wire
If you break or displace the wire, it can be very painful and cause ulcers or abrasions. Try to move it in to less-irritating positions using a pencil eraser.
Just cover the protruding ends with an orthodontic wax.  Be careful not to cut it because you could end up inhaling or swallowing it.

An individually bent wire usually requires a new one to be made, which can pause the treatment.

How to fix loose or detached brackets/spacers/bands
A loose bracket which becomes completely detached can cause a bit of panic. But, stay calm, take it out and give it to the dentist on your next appointment. If it becomes loose but still attached to the wire, use orthodontic wax to immobilise it.

If you have loose or failing spacers or loose bands, they may need repair or replacing by the dentist. This usually doesn’t cause major problems or any delays to your treatment.

Dealing with damaged or loose retainers
If the fixed retainers become damaged or loose once the treatment is completed, it’s  important to see a dentist as soon as possible to prevent a relapse (teeth moving back to where they used to be).

The use of a removable retainer can prevent such relapses; despite the extra costs it is advisable to have both fixed and removable made. Some modern techniques, like Lingual Braces or Self- Ligating Braces significantly decrease risk of most problems from occurring.
