Prevention is modern way of staying healthy

Dr Richard Ho from Synergy Dental Clinics helps with advice on dental problems

Q. What is preventative dentistry and how will it benefit my dental health?

A. Preventative dentistry is simply a modern way of making sure that you have a healthy mouth. The aim is to help you keep your teeth in the best shape and condition so that you do not need to have much dental treatment.

The highest contributing factors to tooth loss are tooth decay and gum disease. That’s why, if you make more of an effort to deal with those issues, your chances of keeping your teeth for life
will increase significantly.

As long as you have a full or partial set of teeth, your dentist will always try to help you ensure that they stay in the best of conditions. Even with people who have no teeth, there is still some benefit, as certain conditions such as mouth cancer or denture stomatitis can be spotted. That is why it is important for patients to
work with their dentist because it can help to prevent the need for extensive treatment such as fillings and extractions.

Sometimes, your dentist may advise you to undergo a course of treatment to help ensure your mouth is in good condition – then work on a plan to help you keep on top of it. There are many preventative measures that you can also take in your day-to-day life – by cutting down the number of acidic foods and drinks you consume to avoid erosion of your teeth…
