What is a Scale and Polish?
This includes removal of tartar and plaque build up which results in gum disease. Followed by a full mouth polish leaving your teeth smooth and fresh.
How much does it cost?
A simple scale = £15 (part of the private band 1 treatment)
A stain removal scale & Polish = £45 (which inlcudes a thorough polishing of teeth and removal of superficial stains from smoking, tea, coffee and red wine.
How long does it take?
Usually it requires only 1 session of about 10-15 minutes. However, some patients may require additional appointments depending on the status and health of your teeth and gums. Your dentist will be best able to advise you on how many sessions are required.
Does it hurt?
No. As the cleaning is done above the gums, you should not feel any tenderness at all. A simple Scale and Polish will be slightly sensitive according to individual tolerance levels.
I don’t like the noise of the scaling, what should I do?
We allow you to bring in your CD player with some headfones. We recommend this for all your other treatments.
How many times should I have a scale and Polish?
Regular hygienist appointments are recommended for patients with a higher risk of gum disease. The dentist will assess you and best advise how often you should have a scale and polish. Patients with a high rate of tartar build up may need to have a 3 monthly Scale and Polish
What if I don’t have regular scale and polishes?
If you are a low risk patient with good oral hygiene practices, a regular Scale and Polish may not be required. If you are at risk of gum disease, then you should have regular scale and Polishes. If not, you could develop Advanced Gum Disease and lose your teeth We strongly recommend against this.
My teeth are stained, will a Scale and Polish remove this?
Stubborn tooth stains such as those caused by tobacco/ red wine etc may not be cleaned using the scale & Polish alone. Professional whitening would be strongly recommended for this purpose. Please ask your dentist for further advice.
