What is decay?Decay, otherwise known as caries, is the process that causes damage to your teeth. It is caused as a result of plaque and tartar build up due to inadequate oral hygiene. How is decay caused?Bacteria in the plaque feeds on the sugars from the food that you eat. As they feed, they produce and release Lactic Acid onto your teeth. Acid dissolves teeth away and softens the surface enamel of your teeth. This process continues until so much of the tooth surface has been softened that it cracks and a hole appears. How do I know that my teeth are decayed?Unless your teeth have big holes or they hurt, you will not realise that you are suffering from decay. Only your dentist will know if you are developing decay by taking relevant xrays etc. You need to visit your dentist regularly to detect decay early before it is too late. How can decay be treated?Depending on the extent of decay, a number of options will be available. This ranges from simple fillings to Inlays and crowns or to have teeth taken out.
